Um...I really hate the ice cream man. There are two different trucks that come through our neighborhood twice a day. Piper throws a fit if she hears the music and it's hard to talk her down from getting an ice cream. Sigh! It's going to be a long summer!

Family Learning Day at Preschool

Piper had her Family Learning Day at preschool on Saturday. Officially her last day of school was Thursday, but they always have a family day of learning too. So she and I went in and had lots of fun. We sorted fruits and veggies. We brushed some giant teeth with a big toothbrush. We did "yoda yoga" and played with the parachute. The children also sang and signed a song for us. I was happy that she tried to sing a bit. :)

Piper played outside almost the entire day today. She rode her bike and scooter here in the neighborhood. She played at grandma's house and drove her jeep and helped in the yard. We walked to the church, and played on the playground there. On the way back one of the neighbors came out to show her the bearded dragon she has. It was molting, and Piper got to take some of it's dead skin.

General Update: April

NAME/ALIAS: AGE: Piper, 3 years 6 months

PSYCHOMOTOR STUFF: hopping better on one foot, seems very clumsy lately- maybe a growth spurt. For sure her feet are huge now. No real new milestones, just perfecting old skills.

COGNITIVE STUFF: I’ve noticed some different imagination techniques- for her at least. She is acting more and more like actual animals when she pretends, more so than just the noises- the real affectations of a cat or a dog. Amazing memory surfaces frequently. She is starting to question things on t.v. more and more, especially when characters are expressing emotion. We talk a lot about real and pretend.

ACADEMICS: Reading and writing growth in the last couple of months. She is going on pure sight words although we try to sound out words occasionally together. She is good with repetitive books, I’d say a level C right now. She points to words so I know she is really reading them and doesn’t just have the whole page memorized. Writing is hard still as there are many letters she just doesn’t know how to make on her own. She can write everyone’s name in the family without help, and a few other words. She has made a couple little books with pictures and words. We started working on telling time last night and she is spontaneously talking about and making patterns all the time.

CREATIVE OUTPUT: Is lately into playdoh again and asks to play most days with it. Is showing a bit more creativity in her designs so they look more like the real thing. Her people drawings are still pretty good, but no new leaps here. She also draws these strange but controlled circular designs.

EMOTIONAL ISSUES: typical 3 year old stuff. sibling rivalry. She is becoming more and more like me in terms of food issues. I try not to let her see mine- but she does all the same things I do. Her food can’t touch, she needs different utensils for each food item, food must be at the right temp. If it is supposed to be hot, it must be HOT not warm. Same with cold temps. I’m hoping she won’t inherit my noise sensitivity as she seems predestined to be as loud as possible. She is very in tune with my emotions though and tries to make me happy if I seem sad, turns down the t.v. if it’s loud, etc.

SCHOOL UPDATES: She did very well on her report card with the exception of social areas. The teacher commented that she has made good progress since she started though, so I am pleased. She has mastered everything else on the academic list (no surprise) I’ve signed her up for next year for two days a week again.

ANYTHING ELSE: Socialization is much improved in last couple of months. She plays regularly with kids in the neighborhood more often now, and seems to interact well with others at school. I’m waiting for a conference next week on this, as socialization is her weakest point at school, and was the main reason I enrolled her there. Oh, and she is pretty much potty trained at night now.

Scrambled Sentences

Piper has learned about 50-60 sight words so far in the last month. We add a new one about every day, sometimes more than one. She picks them up faster if it's one that she requests or has been seeing a lot in her books. So far it's just memorization, which is pretty much the same way I started reading. It's funny that she knows her letter sounds, but isn't at the point where blending them together works for her.

Here are a couple videos showing her making dictated sentences for me. Usually we mix them up and she makes them a couple times again. The second video has a long sentence for her and she had a hard time getting started. It was chaotic as well with Stella "helping" and I edited out the first half of the video.

NAME/ALIAS: AGE: Piper, 3 years 4 months

PSYCHOMOTOR STUFF: Getting better at playing the Wii, likes the Wii Fit game for kids especially. Walked on stilts (cans basically) at the Children’s Museum. She was adamant she wanted to try them, and hopped right on. Even when someone knocked her off, she climbed right back on. I need to make her a pair to play with at home now.

COGNITIVE STUFF: Loves her Leapster Explorer, still argues about everything and debates/explains why she is right and you are wrong.

ACADEMICS: Is doing some workbook type stuff- nothing major, nothing hard. I was surprised at how easy they were, and how many things in them she learned even years ago. She really likes the Cariboo game I picked up for her, but she does try to cheat and figure out where the balls are ahead of time so she can find the right card to get it.

CREATIVE OUTPUT: coloring more inside the lines, and with more focus than before.

EMOTIONAL ISSUES: She is the most stubborn person I know, and she can ignore you like nothing I have ever seen. Everyone comments on the ignoring factor. If she doesn’t want to do something, or if she has her mind made up- she will not look at you, and there is no emotion whatsoever. You are simply not there.

ANYTHING ELSE: Loves her sister dearly. She is so good with her, makes her laugh, plays with her, speaks for her, carries on a conversation with her and then tells me what Stella said. I am enjoying watching them play and learn from each other.

Polar Bear Express

We did the Santa train last night. It wasn't a complete fail, but not exactly a success either. They listened to a story, and then boarded the train for an hour long ride. We got to see lots of lights and deocrations, as well as many people and costumed characters waving to us. On board, the kids were served giant sugar cookies, hot chocolate, a bag of candy and yogurt pretzles, and given a small stuffed polar bear. They were visited by a costumed polar bear and Mr. and Mrs. Claus. It was really nice that they spread everything out and each person took time to talk and sing to every child and take as many pictures as you wanted to take.

Hiding from Santa

With that being said, the polar bear was a hit after the first time through. Piper launched herself at him after refusing to get near him when he visited the first time. Stella was okay with him.

They both liked Mrs. Claus, I think because she passed out the stuffed bears. When Santa walked through, Stella cried when he held her, and Piper hid between the seats of the train. I managed to get this shot while she was distracted by the polar bear after the ride was over.

NAME/ALIAS: AGE: Piper, 3 years 2months

PSYCHOMOTOR STUFF: getting better at really using a hula hoop now, tries to dribble a ball (hands)

COGNITIVE STUFF: She is big into arguing her point now, and is very logical about it too- not the typical arguing tantrum type stuff she has done for months. Her language is much more rich and complex and expressive. Sometimes I am just amazed at how she speaks- and the things that come out of her mouth in her baby sounding voice.

ACADEMICS: Last night we went out to dinner and she entertained herself with the sugar packets: making patterns and counting them. She is really into counting everything right now and has great one to one correspondence. The teens mess her up, and as long as it took her to count to 12, it might be ages before she gets to 20 correctly. She continues to be fascinated with the moon, and we talked more about it last night since it was a crescent moon. At dinner she told us that our lemons were crescents- apparently her word of the day. She pointed out the stars in the sky and argued with us about whether one was an airplane, a star, or a planet. Self-sufficient on the computer with general use. Can use Word and Paint. plus several software programs like KidPix and JumpStart. Opens and closes programs with ease, prints, and shuts down computer.

CREATIVE OUTPUT: Lots of building of forts, tents, houses: out of pillows, couch cushions, blankets, and other misc. materials. She has very elaborate plans and gets upset when we make her clean up. Poor Stella is picked up and carried to these areas and forced to play. :) She has also been rewriting songs that she knows with new lyrics. I was impressed that the meter and rhythm still matched the original tune.

EMOTIONAL ISSUES: Again, very argumentative, usually age appropriate when tired or hungry, but often just to be silly or sarcastic. Is completely logical and uses reasoning with her debating. She’s loud! I guess in general we are a loud family, but it really comes to light watching her. Will not sleep in her own bed. We have finally got her out of our bed and sleeping in a chair/ottoman combo in our bedroom. Is embarrassed about performing still- will NOT perform if asked. I caught her waltzing the other day with her stuffed dog and she immediately stopped and hid when I looked at her.

Halloween

Piper loved Halloween and true to form was Dorothy again this year. I don't think the costume will fit next year, so she'll be forced to pick something new. :) She was up bright and early Halloween Day dressed in her costume and shoes watching the Wizard of Oz for the upteenth time.

She loved trick or treating once she got into it. She was a bit shy going to the doors by herself, and when she got tired, she was done. Nothing would convince her to go to another door. She told us she had plenty of candy. When we got back to her grandparents' house, she passed out a few pieces to the kids who were still coming to the door. She also had fun sorting all of her candy into piles and counting it all.

Pumpkin Patch

We went to the pumpkin patch today with both the girls. Erick got free passes for us at work, so that saved us $18. :) Piper had a lot of fun picking out just the right pumpkin. They had lots for the kids to do: corn mazes, tricycle path, petting zoo, hay ride, bounce house and slides, live music, food, and more. She was a little cranky and grouchy by the end, but she had fun. She fell alseep in the car on the way home.

Riding Her Bike

Piper finally has enough interest to ride her big bike now. Her 12 in. bicycle is too small for her, but she wouldn't really try riding this one (16 in.) much this summer because it is still a little big for her and wobbles a bit. This one also has the braking issue when the pedal is pushed the opposite direction, so she sometimes has trouble getting around it. She is getting a lot better at it after this first time though.

NAME/ALIAS: AGE: Piper, 3years 1 month

PSYCHOMOTOR STUFF: Finally got brave enough this last month to ride her 16in bike (even though she rode her 12in one with no problem) She’s had it forever, but I think she was scared because it wobbled a bit when she’d get on it. It still a tad bit too tall for her, but she did great. We also recently acquired a Wii system, and she is all over it. She loves the swordfighting game especially.

COGNITIVE STUFF: She’s finally ready to do puzzles on her own. Nothing amazing since she’s only doing 12 piece ones independently, but I am so proud of her for finally having the patience and drive to complete them. Previously she would only do them if I helped her and gave her hints about turning the pieces, and would throw a fit if they would not fit exactly. She will work on 24 piece puzzles with a lot of encouragement.

I always type out her update in Word before I post it. I realized that last October’s update was in the same folder so I opened it up and this is what it said:

“Piper has discovered YouTube on the iPhone and looks for favorite videos. She is really good at the puzzles on it even though she struggles with regular ones without help. She gives up too easily when frustrated because a piece won’t fit perfectly even when she knows where it goes.”

Funny that I was talking about her frustration back then too!

ACADEMICS: I’ve noticed more patterning with her blocks. She is a whiz on the computer now and it’s a fight for me to be able to get on it myself. I got her the Jump Start cd’s for Pre-school and kindergarten, and it will be interesting to see how she does on them. I’ve observed her trying to teach Stella to do things like use my iPhone and turn pages in books. Other than a couple of sight words, there’s no real reading yet. I’ve made her a couple of books to hopefully encouraqe her. She’s been very interested in the Scrabble Jr. game lately though, and also in copying my writing. She will only write her name by herself if I bribe her however.

CREATIVE OUTPUT: Lots of drawings- more birthday cakes, an aquarium with fish and a castle, has added eyebrows to her people drawings.

EMOTIONAL ISSUES: Very strong-willed and independent right now. Is having difficulty with jealousy over any of Stella’s new milestones. If someone is excited that Stella can crawl, then Piper immediately has to show us she can crawl too.

General Update

Child's name: Piper

Age (in months, or years and months): almost 36 months! She will be 3 on the 11th, so I guess this is my last general update here.

Physical abilities: She got a real hula hoop and a real jump rope as an early birthday present from my sister. Previously, she had been using various things around the house to play the part. She is not great at either one yet, but she can get the hula hoop around a couple of times, and she tries so hard to jump rope. Maybe soon she’ll figure it out. She can write her name and use a computer mouse correctly. I had to bribe her to get a video of her writing her name. She was being as silly as she could to push my buttons, but I kind of still got a record of it.

Speech/language: vocabulary, sentence length, etc: speaks pretty well in long sentences and clauses. Vocabulary is good, as in I have nothing to compare it to but she uses some fairly complex words. She surprised me by counting to 8 in Spanish the other day. I wonder how many other words she knows since she is not a performer at all. The main language hang-up she has right now is using “her” in place of “she”.

Reading/pre-reading: She knows a couple sight words and her name, but I have not done anything with her in the longest time. She reads her books to herself and tells the story by the pictures even if she’s never read it before. She reads to Stella all the time too, especially the concept books with a picture and one word. Asks me to write other words like mom, dad. and caterpillar. She knows environmental print like store signs and traffic signs.

Number stuff: I overheard her count to 8 in Spanish and 11 in English. Direct teaching has no result. She’ll get it when she gets it. Getting better with patterns.

Other cognitive stuff: puzzles, reasoning, etc: She is very interested in games right now, board games and especially computer games. She is quite proficient on the computer and easily starts her games up to play. These games work on patterns, letters, numbers. shapes, colors, etc. Some of it she already knows, but its still fun for her. She loves to do mazes.

Creativity: Loves to make lists, especially birthday lists, and tells me what to write. She drew this picture of a birthday cake a few weeks ago, but I hadn’t posted it yet. The cake is sitting on a plate and has 6 candles, apparently she thinks she should be six this year. The swirls on the cake are the sprinkles and icing.

Imagination: most of her play is pretend play now. She loves her dollhouse and her regular dolls.

Social:really wants to be and play with other children. She is still a bit aggressive at times with others her own age. She is wonderful with Stella, and does everything she can to make her happy when she is sad. I love that she gets up every day and tells her good morning. She talks to her like a normal person and not a baby, which is so nice to hear. She also “translates” for us what Stella is saying.

Character/personality: Still aggressive but can be very sweet and loving. I’m ready for the terrible twos to be done. She never really has true tantrums, but she is very vocal when she wants something, and has little patience for waiting.

School Updates: n/a I’m looking in to sending her somewhere for a couple days a week just to be with other kids.

Marion County Fair

We went to the Marion County fair this week. Piper had a great time riding the rides, playing games, and seeing the animals. She was just barely too short to ride some of the big rides, and she wanted to go on absolutely everything. She loved the motorcycles that had ramps to jump. I can't wait till next year when both the girls can ride together.

Using the Computer

Piper has gotten really good on the computer and can use the mouse fairly well on her own. She likes to play Starfall and a couple other games I downloaded for her. Starfall she can do pretty independently, but with the other games I have to stay close because she can get frustrated at times since she has not played them as much yet. It's scary to think how quickly they learn technology. We didn't have anything like this when I was her age, and there was definitely no internet yet.

Smoothies

Nick Jr. has a segment on every so often about making smoothies. I figured this could be something we could do together. Piper helped me get the fruit ready, and she put it in the blender. We used strawberries, cherries, blackberries, and I snuck in a plum. She had never had one before and we had a dozen that were going to go to waste. We also added fruit juice and some plain yogurt. She loved pushing the buttons on the blender and was excited to finally make it. Of course she had to have stickers on her straw like they do on t.v. Now every time it comes on, she reminds me that we made them together.

Independence Day

Piper loved the fireworks today. Erick bought her some sparklers, but she wasn't too sure about holding them. She liked looking at them though. We spent the day at the grandparents, and then went downtown to Greg's to watch the show. I think she had more fun catching fireflies with Grandma than watching the fireworks however.

General Update

Age (in months, or years and months): almost 34 months

Physical abilities: As I suspected she is perfectly capable of pedaling her bikes, she was just being stubborn. She does it all the time inside on the carpet, but refuses to do it outside, for me at least. It’s ten times harder on the carpet, but whatever. She’s getting really good on the monkey bars and I am barely holding on now. She’s just lacking a bit of upper body strength. She is very close to writing her first name independently.

Speech/language: vocabulary, sentence length, etc: increasingly complex

Reading/pre-reading: We’ve been reading more this month and I signed her up for the summer reading program at the library. This is her third year at it and we always get some good prizes at the end, especially more books. She got her first library card this week and was so excited. My goal is to start taking her to the story time once a week. On another note, I am dreadfully tired of “Word World” and “ Letter Factory” She knows quite a few letter sounds now, and tells me things like “P is for Piper, and pirate.“ She made me laugh this week when she tried to read one of Erick’s books. She told me that his book had lots of words but no pictures and her books had lots of pictures but not as many words. She then proceeded to “read” his book by pointing to the letters and singing her ABC’s.

Number stuff: nothing new except she has been focusing more on ordinal numbers: first, second, third, She is starting to really like the Umizoomi cartoon and I think it may help her with math. She loves to answer Dora when they ask addition and subtraction questions, and usually is right.

Creativity: not as much drawing lately, more writing of letters especially her name. She still draws people from time to time, and the occasional object like a rainbow, snake, boats, etc. I noticed her figure out how to draw water by adding waves underneath her boat. Today she was drawing a seahorse who lived in the river, and then wanted to argue with me about it.

Imagination: has added more voices to her imaginary repertoire. I love her evil laugh!

Social: very social with kids, initiates conversations with them. She made a new friend at the park, and I think I did too. (Why is it so hard to makes new friends as an adult?) Piper still tends to be aggressive towards other though in her play.

Character/personality: Has two personalities at times. She can be sweet, thoughtful, and helpful one moment, and the next be screaming and whining. Again, food and rest play a major part. She will not nap anymore even though she really needs it.

Carnival

Today Piper finally achieved her long awaited dream to ride a roller coaster. It was really

cheesy, and I think she would like a bigger one better. At first she was upset because she did not want to ride it herself, so Erick got on with her and she had a great time.

She loved all of the other rides, especially the Tilt-a-Whirl. She rode it once with Mommy and once with Daddy. Apparently we are getting old since we both felt sick after riding it.

She threw a fit because she wanted to ride one of the bigger rides, and I was surprised they let her on it. She thought it was a train because it had a train whistle and played music. Of course she loved every minute. She would have ridden more rides but she was too small for some of them, plus it was expensive since we had to ride with her on most of them. They wouldn't let her

on the pirate ship because she was an inch too short.

This is the one kiddie ride that she rode by herself. It just flew in a circle up in the air.

Library Card

Piper got her first library card today. We went last week to get it, but I didn't realize she had to have her birth certificate, so we returned today. The library down on the Southside is actually a lot neater than the one we used to go to up North. It has a farm theme (Yeah...there's more than corn in Indiana) and it's really cute. She loves the tractor that you can climb inside and "drive" as well as all the puzzles and computers. We picked out lots of books to read. Last week she got a bunch of books about storms and weather, but this week she has been really into animals so we got some on snakes, cats, and dogs. We signed up for the summer reading program last week too, and I need to try to start taking her to the story time each week.

Old Settlers Day

We went to the fireworks display after Old Settler's Day in Wanamaker. She enjoyed looking at, and touching the reptiles they had on display, and loved the snakes especially. It was stormy so they moved everyone inside the church. Piper had lots of fun playing with her friend Savannah and the other kids. At one point she was in a group with Savannah and another little girl. Piper is the youngest at age 2 1/2, Savannah is 3 1/2 and the other girl was 4. Guess who was the tallest in the group? Yep, my little Piper was the biggest one there.

She accumulated numerous tattoos tonight and eventually pealed this one off her cheek. She loved the fireworks, but fell asleep in my lap at the very end.

Happy Father's Day

At the Drive -In

We took Piper to her first movie, and decided to go to the drive-in because we weren't sure how she would handle it. I thought she might talk a lot or not be able to sit still. She was pretty good and watched the first half hour or so, then she was done. She said she loved the movie, but eventually was running in circles in front of our area. We watched Toy Story 3, and she thought the monkey with the cymbals was funny. By the time the second movie started at midnight she was asleep.

Piper had fun riding the go-karts and the bumper boats. I even went on the go-karts with her, but it's not really my thing. I thought it was too bumpy and smelled. :)

PBS Kids Day

We took the girls downtown to Military Park for the PBS Kids Day. They had lots of free activities for children to do. It was very hot and muggy, and the lines to do anything were extremely long. We only stayed for about an hour and a half due to this. We did manage to meet Clifford, whom Piper was terrified of seeing. I think she just hates mascots in general. We skipped the other ones which included The Cat in the Hat, Super Why, Rosita, Elmo, and a few more. We did see Gordon from Sesame Street on stage though.She loved the bubble stations and had fun bouncing in the bounce castle. She started to do a couple other bounce stations but didn't get very far. She was so tired and hot.

Swimming at Grandma's House

Piper had lots of fun swimming in her little pool at Grandma's house. She really liked the hose best though. It was pretty hot and the water felt good. Even the cold water in the pool got really warm quickly. She enjoyed playing with Peyton who lives down the street. They both took turns emptying out the pool, and watering the flowers and trees.

General Update

Age (in months, or years and months): 33 months

Physical abilities: refuses to pedal her trike or bike even though she used to be able to do it. She will do it once in a while, or in strange places like the grass where it barely moves. Grandma says she has pedaled for her though. She’s just being stubborn for me I guess.

Speech/language: vocabulary, sentence length, etc: Even more songs this month. I’m trying to write them down as I hear them to keep track. Is making up words like too “birdsy“, “choo chooey“, “splashy“, etc. in addition to regular words like too chilly or too windy. Everything is “too” something.

Reading/pre-reading: Will not perform on command, but I know she knows all her letters still as I hear her talking to herself about them, or when she asks for a certain letter that she can’t reach. We haven’t been reading as many books a day lately…my fault. She can spell her name with magnets, and we are working on writing it.

Number stuff: remains not an interest, is rote counting 1-10 sometimes I hear an 11 or 12

Other cognitive stuff: puzzles, reasoning, etc

Creativity: same

Imagination: so much pretend play lately, has imaginary “friends” that come along with us when we leave. Does not need actual objects to pretend, and just pretends to pick things up and has lengthy conversations with “nothing”

Social: prefers to play with other kids and is sad when they won’t play with her because they are older or when there is no one around at all to play with on the playground.

Character/personality: I’ve decided she loves her sister in the morning and as the day goes on she likes her less and less. She is handful these days being very demanding, whiny, and has to have everything a certain way.

First Swim of the Season

We went swimming for the first time this summer. Piper had so much fun playing in both the baby pool and the big pool. She loved jumping into the water as long as one of us was there to catch her. Her friend Andre had a toy fishing pole that caught little fish, and she thought it was a lot of fun. I'll have to see if I can find one now for her too since she liked it so much.

New Room

Piper is also getting a new room just like Stella. She graduated from her crib to a twin bed and is enjoying the newfound space. Daddy is busy painting her room in a Dora theme. So far he just has the Grumpy Old Troll and Dora done on one wall. I'll be posting more as he completes them, as well as the final product. I can't wait to see it all come together.

May: General Update

Age (in months, or years and months): 31.5 months

Physical abilities: Is trying to do the monkey bars/rings at the park. Does pretty well, but I still have to support her legs as she moves her arms independently. Has developed an increased love of dance again this month. Weird jumping moves where she stands in place with her feet spread wide apart and jumps straight in the air and turns 180 degrees then plants her feet again.

Speech/language: vocabulary, sentence length, etc: Singing finally! She started out with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and has added several more songs to her repertoire in the last couple of weeks. She was always one to sing and make up her own songs, but singing known songs is new for her.

Reading/pre-reading: ABC song, Has picture read a story to Stella a couple of times, but nothing particularly new as of late.

Number stuff: We have more rote counting this month: 1-8. She is still much better at number recognition and 1:1 counting than she is at rote counting. I find this odd, but maybe it’s normal?

Other cognitive stuff: puzzles, reasoning, etc Very interested in weather this month and night vs. day. Seems to be trying to figure out how the sun and the moon relate to one another and the patterns that ensue.

Creativity: same

Imagination: More pretend play, imaginary friend play, is using her kitchen more since I moved it into the living room again.

Social: Is interacting m ore with other kids when she has the opportunity. She still gravitates towards older ones, but is starting to prefer girls more often…or maybe she’s just has more chances to play with girls lately.

Character/personality: sweet, loving, stubborn, argumentative, bossy, loud

The girls and I went to the Indianapolis Museum of Art to visit. It was too beautiful outside, so we toured some of the gardens rather than going inside for the exhibits. Piper loved the water features, and was surprised when the first fountain erupted. We also toured the Lily House and got to ride in an old style elevator with an iron gate. Out of everything we looked at... the gorgeous flowers and blooms, the ponds, the statues, Piper was most interested and fascinated by the plethora of storm drains that we walked over. They were of every shape and size, and some of them had engravings of fish on them. Go figure!

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Here is Piper's debut song, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". She is more likely to make up her own songs than to sing a regular song. I guess that's the creative part in her. She has many snippets of songs memorized, but this is the first one she really knows the words to the whole thing...although she usually forgets the one line unless prompted, as you will soon see.

Southwestway Park

We went to try out a new park the other day. Erick wanted to play disc golf, but we couldn't figure out where it was, so we just played on the playground and then took a hike. In my opinion, the playground was really intended for big kids. The actual slides were very challenging to get to, but Piper persevered and climbed up the chain ladder with a little help.

She did make a friend however, and had fun running around with her, and then blowing bubbles with her and her little brother. Erick and I were debating about how old the kids were. Piper was all about playing with the girl who appeared to me to be about 4-5. She was barely taller than Piper, but her speech was more sophisticated. The little boy I guessed to be barely 2, maybe younger based on his movements and speech. Piper wanted nothing to do with him, when normally she likes to play with the boys, and I attributed it to him being younger than her. Erick thought the girl was about 3 and the boy the same as I guessed. I finally asked their father how old they were, and he told me the girl had just turned 5 in January which confirmed my suspicions. The boy as it turned out, was exactly the same age as Piper, which really surprised me.

Afterwards we took a hike through the woods to "look for bears", but of course we didn't find any. Piper collected her usual stash of sticks, and pointed out all the flowers and bugs to us along the way.

We took the girls to grandma's church for an Easter Egg Hunt. I was disappointed that it was rainy and we had to do it indoors. Piper had a great time collecting her eggs and mangaged to fill her basket until it was overflowing. She received so much candy that I'll probably have to throw most of it away or else she'll have rotten teeth. She did not win the special prize, because Mommy stupidly gave the egg away to someone else that had the ticket in it. Oh well, she still had a great time. She was very cute during the lesson too and kept raising her hand like the other kids even though she had no clue how to answer the preacher's questions. Thankfully he didn't call on her. She loved playing with the other kids and running around on the stage. Most of the time there was this little boy who was chasing her trying to grab her wings. I'm happy that she is finally at the point where she enjoys playing with other children.

General Update April

Age (in months, or years and months): almost 31 months

Physical abilities: Is doing better at jumping over objects and is also trying to jump rope. Has been very interested in using scissors this month and is actually doing quite well with them. Mostly doing small cuts and not long ones yet. Discovered the corkscrew apparatus at the playground and enjoys twisting around it from top to bottom.

Speech/language: vocabulary, sentence length, etc: The girl talks non-stop and is driving us all crazy. She narrates to herself all the time, as well as demanding our attention and acknowledgment when she is speaking. Vocabulary use this month includes: terrible, exquisite, and interesting. She now declares certain things as her “favorite” now, and her new catch phrase is “Let me share that with you” as in I have something she wants and now I have to share with her. I’ve heard several Spanish and Chinese words this month also, and she obviously memorized certain vocab from t.v. and her Dora books such as “sigue” “vamonos” and “abre”

Reading/pre-reading: nothing new, still reads tons of books and enjoys “reading” to the baby. If I have to read Snow White and the Seven Dwarves one more time I might go insane though.

Number stuff: I am starting to hear more correct rote counting 1-5, although it is still hit and miss. She has a new sudden increased interest in money and knows all the coin names, although she does mix them up at times.

Other cognitive stuff: puzzles, reasoning, etc: Is making connections between everything, especially if it relates to something she has seen on Dora. Another catch phrase is “that’s just like…” She told me the other day that I must have taken a shower while she was at the playground because my hair was wet. We have begun attempting some very simple mazes and thinking skill type activities such as looking at a picture and trying to decide what’s wrong with it or what’s missing?

Creativity: Has started drawing tadpole people this month, and carries around this little notebook she loves to write and draw in. Still prefers pens to other mediums right now. Cuts out snowflakes using her scissors and attempts to fold paper into airplanes with limited success.

Imagination: Still very involved in pretend play

Social: I’m seeing more interactive play with other kids. Likes to play tag- her version of running around and screaming “you can‘t catch me!”. Declares other to be her “best friend” and this changes by the minute and often includes me

Character/personality: Has adapted well to the arrival of Stella at the beginning of the month. Was a little whiny at times, but is doing better. Still figuring out her new role and position in the family. She is working out how far she can push us and whether or not I will get up to discipline her while nursing. Definitely pushing her boundaries to see how far she can go. I’m seeing arguing from her lately rather than compliance and following directions. We are working on expressing our emotions, and she can be so funny at times. She told me at the store the other day with such expression in voice and body “I am NOT happy Mommy!” The lady behind us was cracking up. I feel like she has grown up sooo much this month, even more than I thought It doesn’t help that I get weekly comments from people who think she is at least 4 years old. On a positive note she is pretty much potty trained now and has not regressed yet.
